Question:

Why is 2012 a frantic code Red, while LHC is a bland Yellow?

Given that scientists lie to the public in any issue they can get away with, isn't LHC switch on a clear and present danger, while conspiracy theorists are busy discussing Nibiru?

Apart from the fact that Nibiru has four years to be milked, and LHC doomsday is right around the corner, any other reason to believe in complete fiction, but no rise an eyebrow on something actually happening?

Please help me up on this.

  1. neither one is anything to get all cranked up about..... LHC is just another collider, like those we've been using for decades... no biggie there.....

and the 2012 stuff is horsehockey............all smoke and mirrors to frighten the young and bilk the older ones of their cash.......

  2. There's absolutely no reason to worry about either one of them.

How is it that you think scientists lie to the public?  Scientists are *part* of the public, they're not some separate elite race that lives in scienceland and puts up electric fences to keep all the 'normals' out.

I think the general public just isn't aware that science isn't what they see in saturday morning cartoons any more than roadrunners and coyotes are.  We don't have a complex at the north pole where we fly all our jet cars and submarines to so we can talk about taking over the world, and we don't wait for lightning storms so we can raise armies of the undead.

edit: nevermind, I think you were kidding about that part.  My sarcasm detector has low sensitivity here since there is so much real anti-science and anti-intellectualism that comes through

  3. The LHC hasn't made it on the History Channel yet.  There haven't been any books about it.  If it had been the subject of the popular media, with a little conspiracy theory thrown in, it would have been brought up here about 10,000 times by now.

In any case, I have seen some web sites and youtube videos based on the presumed LHC apocalypse.

What lies are you referring to?

  4. well nibiru doesnt exist.

and if the general public would shut the h**l up and listen they would realize that the LHC poses no danger at all

  5. Well, if LHC doomsday is really right around the corner, none of this will matter, will it...?

  6. why can't you lunatics just find something real to worry about, and actually do something to fix it?

  7. There is nothing you can do to stop the LHC. So you might as well start raping and pillaging now. You only have 2 months before the end of the world.

Also, I can't believe those crazy Nibiru conspiracy theorists. The only kooks that can be trusted are the LHC doomsayers.

  8. Neither are threats. Plain and simple.

  9. Well, now people in this section are starting to question the LHC. they are starting to tie it into the 2012 doomsday theory. I think a lot of people that believe in the 2012 c**p aren't smart enough to actually comprehend this machine. and if they do read the article, they get everything wrong. and please, don't give them any ideas!

  10. How on Earth did you become a top contributor? It can't have been in a science category. If you want to be a gullible muppet and suffer anxiety attacks about imaginary disasters, conjured up in the minds of scientifically illiterate people, be my guest.

  11. I cant really say much to help you on this apart from the fact that the LHC is just a mirror of whats happeing when high velocity particals impact the atmosphere every day... anyone who does not understand that its main new property is the huge superfast camera microscope, and that the collision part of it is nothing new should not have the right to make any commets on it. but yet, as always they do.

  12. While I wont say it's impossible for the LHC to destroy us all, the probability of a black hole or some other catastrophe occurring in that collider is about the same as you walking straight through a solid brick wall.  It's technically possible, but the chances are so small, it's zero.  As far as the fact that the public is more focused on 2012, it's because most people don't have the educational background to understand the LHC and what it's capable, and not capable, of.  On the other hand, it doesn't take much intelligence to comprehend another Mayan doomsday scenario.  People almost live for that stuff because it's exciting.  Everyone wants to get caught up in the hype.  Not too many people care about finding the Higgs boson or finding some way to prove string theory...which they should!

And no, the LHC doomsday is NOT right around the corner and it's NOT a clear and present danger.  idk if the media just wants to generate hype or some physicist wants to become famous as an idiot because his career's going nowhere, but there's no way anything harmful will come out of the LHC and swallow the world.  If you ask me, doomsdayers should be far more worried about the one nuke in the world that will eventually go missing only to reappear as a mushroom cloud over some population center.  That's far more likely than a black hole or a mayan prophecy.

  13. 2012 and Planet X are a HOAX!

The super- atom smasher is real-- or soon will be in August.
