It's not, it's all made up.  There's this symbol of power supposedly that's all the numbers from one to (can't remember) and if you add them all together, it equals 666.  It looks like a grid and it's called a sun seal.

Apparently if you are wise and have insight, it can be calculated.

It is a misinterpretation from the book of Revelation. Hebrew letters were given a numeric value and all words were supposed to have similar or equivalent meanings.

The passage actually refers to the Emperor Nero of the Roman Empire. In translation the letters were confused and the true numerical value of the name has long since been established as 616

So neither 666 or 616 are no.s of the Devil.

The devil is a creation of later times.
