Why is AFL more of a success than rugby in Australia?

That's a very interesting question -probably soccer, cricket, league and union would all say they are the most successful sport. Whats makes AFLis the crowds - no sport in Australia can attract the numbers that the AFL can attract and all the other sports are very jealous.

In recent years many parents have become worried about their kids being hurt in rugby because it is a gane of size rather than skill. In AFL there is a place for small men, big men, fast men while rugby is still a long way behind.

it's more widespread. afl clubs are in nsw,qld,vic,sa,wa whilst nrl clubs are in nsw,qld,act.vic and nz. act is practically nsw and nz is another country. plus indigenous aboriginals also invented afl, whilst nrl comes from the uk. so afl is more aussie and therefore more successful
