  1. It depends on how far in advance you purchase your tickets, just like the airlines.

I was able to travel round trip from East Lansing, MI to Raton, NM for $250, and that was with purchasing tickets 6 months in advance. If I had waited until the month prior, the price would have surely doubled.

  2. deisel RR engines get about 40 gallons to the mile..lol

    ride a bus

  3. cost of diesel fuel and government regulations

  4. Short version: Amtrak changed the rules.  Now, tickets are cheaper if you buy them sooner.   So stop trying to buy tix at the last minute, it doesn't work!

Long version: Amtrak recently changed their fare structure.  Now they do what airlines and hotels have done for years.  It's called "yield management".  Loosely translated, that means they vary the price according to demand, and they also charge less (or more) based on how late you buy your tickets.  Here's more:

  5. I have seem Amtrak go down the rail with just a hand full of people in the cars. Less people, the more the cost pr person.

If it was not for the mails cars, no one could afford to ride.

  6. Same reason your cable rates are so high.
