  1. Africa is a continent, just in case nobody has mentioned this already.

  2. hun Africa is a continent not a country

  3. Africa is a CONTINENT.  Not all countries within Africa are poor, only SOME of them.

  4. Africa in general is a continent is poor for a number of reasons.

You could say it started hundreds of years ago when white sailors from Europe and America travelled to Africa and literally stole it's people to be slaves. The peolple left literally had to learn how to form communites and friendships again, build local governments and so on.

This lack of leadership has always seem to have stayed with Africa.

Africa isn't a resource poor continent it is rich in resources such as the ones you have mentioned.

But there isn't any infrastructure to extract, export and deliver these resources. That's when people in Africa will be prepared to slaughter each other for the diamonds and so on as no one else is doing anything properly about it.

It all comes down to leardership.

  5. Africa is not a country.  Sigh.

The question that you're trying to ask is an interesting one, and many different people have formed many different opinions.

I am not an expert. My first answer, though, would be that for a long time, the black Africans didn't/ haven't owned the wealth in Africa. White people have.

Also, even in this day and age there is tribal war and political upheaval in Africa. In many parts of Africa, they're still trying to overthrow oppressive governments and achieve independence. Even when black Africans have taken control, there has been corruption and violence, as dictators fight for dominance.

Many nations in Africa are in their infancy, not as cultures, but politically.  That's often chaotic.

  6. Africa is one of the RICHEST continents with the POOREST people.

    - bad governance

-Outside country's taking advantage of a gad situation.

    - African governments have long complained that U.S. and European agricultural subsidies are undercutting African farmers.

    - An estimated 2 million Africans die each year of AIDS, and 24 million are infected with HIV. Malaria, cholera and even polio are on the rise in Africa, all hampering social and economic development on the globe's most impoverished continent.

    - Poverty rates have fallen across much of the globe. But in sub-Saharan Africa, war and disease hamper development. Leaders who cling to power as their nations crumble are also to blame.

    - Sub-Saharan Africa still doesn't produce enough food to feed its own people. Millions of Africans are chronically malnourished, and the region has become perennially dependent on international food aid.

  7. Africa is a continent, fool!

And it's because of all the debt that they have to pay off to other countries, and George Bush stealing all of their oil.

  8. Africa is the continent.  Some individual countries are wealthy, however, most are not because of outside exploitation and internal political corruption.

  9. Africa is a continent, not all of the countries have rich natural resources, they all share massively incompetent and corrupt governments though.

  10. Britain, has recently increased energy ties with Nigeria, and, agreed to help Nigeria further, if they wish, including security, especially guarding Nigerian oil facilities. Mr Wicks (Britain's energy minister) discussed, the ability of Britain to restructure Nigeria's oil industry, so all Nigerians benefit and resentment of the oil industry is reduced. The energy minister, also visited a gas export terminal in the Niger Delta, and noted that Britain could share its expertise in areas such as "gas distribution and electricity regulation to help Nigeria realise plans to harness its vast gas reserves to tackle the country’s severe power shortages" – The Financial Times (FT.com).

In other parts of Africa, namely Zimbabwe, corruption is very common, and the head of state limits the democratic process. The Ethiopian radio station, Ethiopian FM, have mocked the leaders of Somalia. The radio station claims that the leaders are stuck in internal struggles, whilst the people “live on the brink of a humanitarian disaster in a country that remains violent and ungoverned” – The Financial Times (FT.com).

  11. Because Africa is exploited by richest countries and African Governments have high levels of corruption and a lot of them are incompetent...

  12. Because the whole "fair trade" system isn't in use. True African people get paid a tiny percentage of the money made from their natural resources. And by the way Africa is a continent.
