From "The Contender" to Cotto?  Nothing against Alfonso Gomez, but Cotto is so far beyond him that I have to believe his camp sees it as nothing more than a good warm-up for Cotto that at the same time allows them to "capitalize" on the draw of the PR vs. MX issue.  Because Cotto has nothing career-wise to gain, this must be their view on why Gomez should be allowed a shot at Cotto.

Gomez has continued to progress with solid performances, and has earned himself an excellent opportunity.  No one gives him a chance; so he has little to lose and everything to gain in fighting someone of Cotto's caliber now.

I dont understand either why all these contender bums keep getting big fights , none of them have done anything to deserve these fights and prove they have no buisness in the ring with world class fighters each time they step in the ring. Look what happened to peter manfredo when he fought Calzaghe it was a laughing stock. There are a lot of other fighters cotto could fight instead. Also to make matters worse hes supposed to be fighting mayorga after he disposes of that bum Gomez.

Because cotto is in his free agent mode. meaning that he can defend his belt against a non-mandatory(meaning he can make more money with out getting other promoters involved or having a purse bid.) he wants mayweather but knows that if he waits he will fall out of his free agent mode and will have to fight a mandatory. plus he knows mayweather loves being with the wbc and that the ibf and wba would give him a hard time as the unified champ. so gomez(also mexican) would be a good enough draw for cotto
