Last year the natural snow lingam in Amarnath Cave in Kashmir didn't form even & this year it melted after 13 days. Media reported differently. Some said, it was due to excessive helicopter use for VIPs, some said it was due to large umber of pilgrims doing arti with lamps burning oils, camphor etc & some say it is due to global warming. Some Geologists & environmental scientists talked of heavy deforestation in Kashmir resulting landslides & rise in air temperature. One group has revealed after extensive study that the massive earthquake in October 2005 has badly shaken mountains of Kashmir creating fresh cracks in the loose mountains inside disturbing many-many internal topographic paths of spring water sources, vanishing many thousands(many springs elsewhere dried I too saw recently after earthquake) & affected the one for Amarnath lingam too. Kashmir's mountains are sturdy & loose both & unfortunately, that of Amarnath is very loose which can be affected by an earthquake. It is true that the lingam formation in the cave is due to drop by drop water coming through topographic path(zig-zag having many turns) inside rocks from snow melted at the peak in summer which traverses from peak to the dome shaped cavity in the cave whose top has a hole from where the drops fall & freeze making Baba Barfani. The length went upto 11 feet in the past but it is shorter now. That was vanishing in 4 weeks but now it is going in 13 days. Has anybody full geologically surveyed report of that ? That area is snow covered for over 9 months at 14,000feet altitude & is highly inhospitable causing frost bite too in winter. Heavy deforestation has actually taken place cutting many lakhs of tall centuries old trees & any further such activity may destroy so many things as alarmed recently by many environmentalists. What is the true complete picture ?
