Why is American Chinese food sweet?

Not much sweet and savory is mixed in america. Except some southern dishes.

  2. You think American Chinese food is sweet, come to the UK, everything is sweet over here.  The Indian food, the italian food, it's not right. It's worse than the US. I'm not sure where you live in the US, but keep searching you'll find some good chinese food. You  usually have to pay a little bit more. Most of these restaurants think you like it this way, but I agree it's awful.

    Most ethnic food in a given country is subtly, or not so subtly, altered to better suit local tastes.

    Americans can't eat stuff that is not smothered in sugar, so that's what Chinese American restaurants serve.

  5. Some type of sugar or  sweet syrup is added to counteract with typically spicy authentic Chinese dishes.

  6. Because they don't know how to cook it.
