Why is Antarctic the coldest place in the world?

There are a few reasons for this : First is that the poles get sun-rays at an inclined angle, so the rays are not absorbed. Secondly, the ice reflects most of the sun-rays and the surface fails to absorb the sunlight. During winters, the tilt in the axis of the Earth prevents any sun-rays from hitting the surface of Antartica. Another fact is that the Eastern Antartica is the coldest area as parts of it is almost 3 kms above sea level. This high altitude contributes to the low temperatures.

Since the Sun is not there for six months and when it is the angle of impact is poor (as opposed to the equator where the rays strike head on every day hence it is warmer at the equator) - pack your heavy socks if you're traveling there.
