  1. Green and Gold has been Australia's sporting colours since 1899, and our national colours since 1984. This is, as the first answer described, after our Golden Wattle which is another national Icon.

Our flag is a commonwealth flag, and thus representative of the United Kingdom and their colours.

  2. Green and gold are the colours commonly used by Australians when representing their county in international sporting events. These are the predominant colours found on many species of Wattle, namely, green foliage and golden inflorescences.

The red white and blue flag are because Australia is part of the commonwealth and the British flag makes up a section of the Aussie flag...

  3. because if every country had the same colours as their flags many would look the same nz wears blacks and white and our flag is like australia minus a star so if we both looked like that..plus all the other countries with similar flags

  4. Their national floral emblem, the golden wattle, has those two colors.

I guess they wanted to distinguish themselves from the the many other countries that wear red, white, and blue.

  5. Your national colour doesn't have to be the same colour of your flag. The Dutch flag is also blue, red and white but they wear orange. Italy wears blue for football matches, though blue doesn't appear on their flag. It can be whatever they want it to be.

  6. What the others said, plus it doesn't hurt that it's so eye catching.

In any event, there's just mostly whites and greys and blues, and suddenly there's a bright yellow in the midst. An aussie :]
