  1. It's known as the ultimate artistic Sin City because of some of the darkest days in history took place from the n**i era to the Cold War.

  2. There are several reasons:

    - government support for arts

    - a very tolerant city

    - a very cheap city to leave in, which means that many artists can create without much constraints of costs.

You can see that this is a historical thing as well, as many artists were drawn to Berlin: http://www.gablinger.com/rock.html

  3. a) Historically, as the capital of Preußen, and later of the old Kaiserreich, Berlin was the place the rulers pumped their money into for prestige projects. Hence all the grand historic buildings, theatres, museums, etc. That's the same as with all capitals. (London, Paris, Vienna, etc.)

    b) In the roaring 1920s, Berlin was a very progressive and vibrant metropolis with an important cultural and artistic scene [don't ask me why] and it still lives of that reputation today.

    c) There is obligatory army conscription in Germany. Before 1989 - for political, legal, and constitutional reasons - men living in West-Berlin were exempt from conscription. Many young men who wanted to avoid conscription, moved to Berlin, among them a rather high percentage of free-spirited, "artsy" folks.

    d) With the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the re-unification of the city, Berlin symbolised the time of change, and artists chose to go to Berlin and work there, simply because of this (imagined) "atmosphere" of the "new" era.

    e) From 1989 onwards, far too many houses and apartment blocks were built in Berlin, partly due to tax policies, partly due to false predictions about Berlin's economic potential. In reality, neither the city's economy nor its population justified the creation of that large an amount of new real estate.

That meant that there was a slow but steady crash in Berlin's real estate market. Especially old houses and flats, especially in the eastern half of the city, became dirt cheap to buy or rent. That meant artists (read: people with no secure and steady income, but often with a heightened need for rather large spaces) could afford to get their hands on flats, shops, houses, lofts, etc. according to their needs, which they would never - not even in a hundred years - have been able to afford in cities like London, Paris, Munich, Hamburg, or Cologne, etc.

  4. a lot of artists moved there to live in squats. they have a whole squatter community over there. Also, the Berlin wall was covered in amazing murals. Tourists go there to see that.

  5. Amazing theatre scene, several big houses, many smaller ones, lively independent scene.
