  1. The name of the main church in Florence is Santa Maria del Fiore, frequently referred to as The Duomo. Because Brunelleschi designed the dome on the church, his name is often attached to the dome that but it is not the official name of the church. (The church was called Santa Maria del Fiore more than 100 years before the dome was finished so they couldn't have changed the name from Brunelleschi's dome to Santa Maria.)

The word Duomo is often used in Italy to refer to the most important church in any city. That's why you'll find a Duomo in Milan, Siena and many other places. But it is a generic word that comes from the latin domus, which means home. The reference is to the home of god and to the people's home as church were generally large gathering places for the populace.

  2. Brunelleschi designed the dome; the name of the church is Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.

"Duomo" doesn't mean "dome," it is a generic term for a cathedral church.

I find no references to any renaming.
