Why is Collingwood so hated?

Question

I ask this as someone who knows very little about AFL (only gained an interest in the last few years via husband), therefore I don't know a great deal about Club history or anything like that.....so be gentle with me 8-)

I'm not a Collingwood supporter, but just wondered why they get rubbished so often.....they seem to play pretty well to my unlearned eye

Yes, always wondered why the Magpies were hated so. Carlton seem to be in the same boat.

Because I am from Sydney, I have never understood this. Suppose it's the same reason that everyone in Sydney (except Manly fans) hates Manly RL team

i love evry1 hating us, i hate carlton and essendon just coz i do but then i hate melbourne coz they neva go 2 ANY games except queens birthday n ther all stuck up rich ppl that dont no anythin bout footy(eg. cant name ther whole team n numbers 4 that match ther watchin)so i guess ppl just hate us coz they just do but sum ppl will hate us 4 certain reasons

Depends if you mean why are Collingwood club/players hated or why are the Collingwood fans hated so much.

I think ppl hate the supporters more than the club.  Purely because we are the most passionate, one-eyed and loyal.  We wear our hearts on our sleeves and aren't afraid to show how much we love them.  Also the fact we brag about our president and coach.  The more we succeed, the more hated we are...

As a born and breed Pies supporter, I am well and truly accustomed to the abuse both on this forum and in general.  Take it with a pinch of salt :)

The only thing worst than Collingwood, is Collingwood supporters!!

They Brag and Brag when Collingwood have a win, but go sooky la la  whenever they lose!!

Pie supporters are the most full of SH to the IT  people I have ever meet  ( and I work with plenty of them so I oughta know)

There is quite a bit of History between the Clubs, and or course Colingwood won three flags in a row ( YEARS AND YEARS AGO !! GET OVER IT YOU PIE EATERS)

And i think they had more grand final apperances etc etc.

But i think the real reason they are hated is the arrogance and cockyness ( and general WAN  KER  NESS) of their suopporters.

I asked my grandfather (born and bred Melb) this question not so long ago.  He said there's always been rivalry but it really began in the 1920s with John Wren (Melbourne's Al Capone).  You can read about him at this link:

**From my experience Collingwood supporters are so loud and arrogant.  They are so quiet when they are losing, never want to talk footy and yet the second they start winning they are rubbing it in everyone's face and suddenly footy is the topic to talk about.

I honestly never had anything against Collingwood until I went to their games and just heard their supporters.

In recent years I think a lot of people would say Eddie McGuire has had a lot to do with things.  Eddie is everywhere, shoving Collingwood in everyone's face basically stating that they're the greatest thing since sliced bread and people just got sick of him.  

That's just my opinion anyway**

I don't really know why but I thought it may have something to do with their dominance in the 1930s. I remember the show Power and the Glory and businessman JOhn Wren, who was a life long Collingwood supporter.

Their supporters, especially the one in the Gold Jacket don't help

It's always the supporters. Sometimes you feel happy or sorry for the players but then you meet another supporter.

By the way, black and white are pathetic colours together, something only morons would accept. Juventus and their supporters come to mind.

Probably because back in the day there was Collingwood who to date have appeared in the most grand finals, then there were a few other teams. You either went for Collingwood and was loud and obnoxious about it or you went for one of the other few teams (i.e. Carlton & Essendon) so then you hated the Pies.

On a personal note, when i was in primary school back in the eighties, there were a few Collingwood supporters who either gloated if the Pies won, or sooked and had a tantrum if anyone said boo when they lost. They were worse than the supporters of any other team back then.

I think it could be the supporters from the 80's who have made the team become so disliked!

I am a Carlton supporter. I think Collingwood suffered from the tall poppy syndrome in the early years and no one could beat them so everyone hated them. I don't hate them but love beating them.

it goes back over 100 years when if you lived in collingwood you played and barracked for collingwood ,same as carlton ,richmond footscray ,nth melbourne, melbourne,fitzroy,hawthorn,south melbourne,ect ect,My brother inlaws Grand father lived in parkville (next to carlton) played 1 year at the blues and was told he was too small and two slow to play vfl football in the 20s/30s, Moved to abbottsford next to collingwood the played 273 game for collingwood played in 5 premiship sides including 4 in a row 27/28/29/30 won the best and fairist 1930 and is a member of collingwoods team of the centre on the half back flank. But where the riverly comes from is he had to move suburbs to play for collingwood. That would not happen now but this is where the hatred comes from.

It's the jolly green eyed monster syndrome. Everyone hates us because even though success on the field has been limited the supporters all remain true, loyal and even "rabid" creating a Collingwood vs the rest mentality. You don't become a maggie supporter you are born one and die one. Hence the huge crowds at all games regardless of the Pies position on the ladder. But as pies supporters we love to be hated because then it becomes an Us versus the rest mentality and only makes us love our team more.

Just look at how the Collingwood fans answer in this section & you'll see why Collingwood are hated so much.

Plus there are players like Didak, Medhurst, Rocca etc who act as though they are God's gift to this country. On top of that they have Eddie McGuire as President & that whinger Mick Malthouse as coach.

This answer has been asked quite often lately, and being a Collingwood supporter, I can't say I know why people hate us so much. Don't say it's because of the supporters, because every team has it's minority of ferals. And don't bring up the  issue of the supposed Collingwood fan spitting on Fev, because he was actually an Essendon supporter!

I think that every competition has a 'most hated' club and Collingwood happens to be the AFL's. I think it's fun having rivalry though, it makes supporting Collingwood a whole lot better =)

Sorry guys, it goes back way further than last week...or even last year...

It is deep seeded rivalry from 100 years ago! It is all about where you lived - it was as much a suburb rivalry as it was a football one. Football was the way the rivalry could be expressed!

It has nothing to do with Malthouse, Eddie Maguire or any of those things. These are modern and have nothing to do with it.

There is also the fact that Collingwood were the most successful side going around. They won 4 premierships back to back to back to back in 1927 to 1930. It is a record that still stands today. With success comes distain. People have a tendency to dislike success, especially if it is sustained.

More recently though, a lot has been said about their supporters and their arrogance and it must be said their rough appearance. It has oft been said by Collingwood supporters that "There are two kinds of people in the world. People who are Collingwood supporters and people who want to be." It is arrogance like that make people begin to form opinions about particular sides.

BTW, I do not follow Collingwood. I hate them just as much as the next person!!

Having lived in Melbourne  most of my life and all my boy's  and husband played the game I found out  that is not Collingwood the club that is so disliked it is the supporters that do most of the damage they are so one eyed and always have been I have seen a lot of fights after a game if Collingwood lost even before they leave the ground and it has been going on as long I can remember
