  1. Bad reputation.  There are some places that are dangerous because there's an armed conflict going on, but most of the large cities are perfectly fine to visit. Not more dangerous than a large city in the US.  You just have to use common sense and be street smart, like you would anywhere else.

It is a beautiful country with great places to visit.  Go to Cartagena, Bogota, Villa de Leyva which are the most popular tourist destinations.

  2. Its dangerous because of the guerilla and drug deals going on!

  3. unless you plan to go into the mountains and jungle there is nothing to worry about the cities are very safe, I would say Mexico is more dangerous now...police are being decapitated...wow

  4. It's more hype than it actually is.  I lived in Bogota for about a year back in 2002-2003 and it's a very interesting city.  I remember my mom was afraid of me getting killed or hurt in a bomb blast, but that never happened.  In fact when she finally decided on visting me she wanted to go there every month to shop.  When you do the currency exchange between dollars and pesos it's very favorable.

Won't kid you though, certainly Colombia in general is not the safest of countries, but if you take the necessary precautions you can definitely go to Colombia and have a good time.

Check on the different travel websites and look for vacation packages for Colombia.  Most likely they will involve Cartagena, which is very beautiful, and it's a must if you go to Colombia.

    Give it a shot!

  5. It's not a bad place.... it's actually an awesome place....  It's cities are very cosmopolitan, the people are very very friendly, the culture is very colorful and vibrant....  I go almost every 10 weeks and I love it down there....  so much, I'm thinking of buying a place down there.

I've traveled extensively through Colombia:  Bogota, Cartagena, Cali, Medellin, Monteria, Cerete, Buga, Armenia, etc...  You can always contact me if you want further info.  Always glad to share my experience.

    John.

  6. it's not really all the bad of a place to travel.  yes it's dangerous if you are not cautious but i was there 2 years ago and i felt perfectly safe and would love to go back.  There are some parts of Bogota you shouldn't go....and once you get a little far away from Bogota it get's a little dangerous at night.

    But i loved it! :)

also i would be more concerned traveling to Venezuela now anyways!
