Question:

Why is Comcast insisting I need digital converter boxes?

I just bought a new hd lcd tv with an integrated digital tuner (8vsb atsc and qam). I have 2 other digital ready tv's in the house. Currently I only have the basic analog plan with Comcast. I decided to upgrade to a digital signal and they are telling me that I need digital converter boxes for the 2 digital ready tv's and a hd digital converter for the new tv. Why would I need these? Both of my digital tv's have had digital feeds sent to them through Time Warner without any box (unless I wanted PPV or such) and the new hd tv is presently getting both digital and analog stations.

  1. Unless your TV has a CableCard slot, you can only receive the "Clear" (unscrambled channels).

If you need to receive all supported channels, you need a set-top box from your cable provider.

Get one that supports HDTV, has TWO tuners, and also has a built-in PVR.

    ^^Read it.

  3. Analog is when you use an antenna.

If you already have comcast you have no need for a change of service unless you want to get the best out of that HDTV.

I think the reason they said that was because they thought you meant digital cable, in which case you would need the digital boxes to watch the several hundered channels. TVs only go up to 125, so you need the box to go further.

Just let them know there was a mistake and you don't need the box. But go ahead and get the HD box, it's worth it.
