  2. hmm... copper in the periodic table is written as Cu, which is an abbreviation of cuprum, which is a latin word (all the elements in the periodic table are abbreviations, in latin), which derived from greek. cyprus in the middle ages and earlier, had A LOT of copper, so the romans named it ''aes Cyprium'', and from this it was later simplified to cuprum.

    so in short, cyprus is known as the copper isle, because of the amount of copper.
