Why is David Ferrer the Spanish Player of the Year for 2012? – Tennis Special
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, David Ferrer is amongst the top favourite contenders for the 2013 tennis season.
The Spanish number two, Ferrer, manifested a brilliant tennis career in the 2012 season as he has immense potential to secure the top spot.
Ferrer told the media, “This season has been the best of my career and I will never forget it for many reasons. It was a shame to lose the Davis Cup final, but when you fight as hard as you can and accept you can’t do any more, the defeats are less painful;
we could not have given any more. I had never won a Masters 1000 [title], and I took my chance. It is very important because it was the best season of my career, and I will try to improve my game.”
The Spanish contender had a 76-15 match winning ratio at the end of 2012 season. He is in a perfect shape at this age and is a well-respected professional amongst all his peers.
Due to his consistent game technique, he has proven himself as a tough opponent. In 2011, he made it to the semi-final round of the Australian Open. He rallied past his compatriot, Rafael Nadal but in quarter-finals, lost at the hands of the British number
one, Andy Murray.
The 5 ft 9 in manifested a classic performance in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He avenged his former loss against Murray and the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic but was eliminated by the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer.
The 30-year-old, Ferrer, started the 2012 season by winning the Heineken Open held at the hard courts of Auckland. He rallied past almost all his challengers in straight sets and in the final round, penned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Olivier Rochus.
The right-hander Spaniard was one of the quarter-finalists at the Australian Open. He suffered a defeat against the Serbian number one, Djokovic, in a three set match at the hard courts of Melbourne. Later, he secured the Copa Claro tournament and progressed
with a remarkable momentum to clinch away the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.
Ferrer’s performance at the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open was satisfactory as he was unable to surprise the higher ranked Roger Federer. At the French Open semi-final, he was paired against Nadal and suffered a three set loss.
So far, the Spanish participant is unable to outmuscle the Big Four in any of the ATP Masters Event. He encountered Murray for the second time in the Wimbledon Championships but after a tough battle, he suffered a four set loss.
The Spanish veteran has won trophies in three different courts (hard, clay and grass). The Association of Spanish Tennis Writer (APT) gave him the title of “Spanish Player of the Year.” Previously, Ferrer also bagged home the award in the year 2006.
