Why is Dubai so big, rich, and popular?

There's so many new revolutionary things being built in Dubai. Such as the world islands (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1435877/dynamic_tower_the_worlds_first_rotating_skyscraper/), etc. What makes it spark? Is it the climate? What is making it so popular for new revolutionary things now?

it's not big or popular, and it's a dictatorship, so only the few thugs in charge are rich. they spend the money on idiotic things while 95% of the country starves.

i think they have a king, so obviously he rules everyone and everyone is hypnotized by him. they also have oil right, so look at the gas prices today.. there like a buck thirty... so they make alotaaa monayy.
