  1. FDR was a hero to millions of people. He was put on the dime because of his work establishing the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis which later became the March of Dimes.

Some people want to replace him on the dime with Reagan. My favorite dime was the so called Mercury Head dime. It actually has Liberty on it with a spiffy cap.

  2. Great political figures from American history are portrayed on most U.S. currency. FDR is generally considered to be in the top 3 of the greatest American presidents along with Washington and Lincoln.

But to be more specific, legislation to replace the old "Mercury" dime design with Roosevelt's image was introduced after FDR's death in April 1945. The dime was chosen because of Roosevelt's role in the creation of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later called the March of Dimes), which raised money for polio research and to aid victims and their families. The public had been urged to send in a dime to the Foundation.

  3. From Wikipedia - "Soon after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1945, legislation was introduced by Virginia Congressman Ralph H. Daughton that called for the replacement of the Mercury dime with one bearing Roosevelt's image. The dime was chosen to honor Roosevelt partly due to his efforts in the founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (later renamed the March of Dimes), which originally raised money for polio research and to aid victims of the disease and their families. The public had been urged to send in a dime to the Foundation, and by Roosevelt's death, the Foundation was already popularly known as the "March of Dimes.""

  4. FDR was one of the greatest American presidents, like Washington and Lincoln.

  5. in 1946 it was decided by the US government to have the face of the dime to change from the old Mercury dime to the face of FDR who had died a year earlier, the same is similar with Lincoln on the penny in 1909;Washington on the quarter in 1932

  6. FDR is one of the greatest presidents the United States has ever known.  Despite being crippled, he led the country through some of it's darkest hours, relieving the Great Depression, and leading us through World War II.  He is on the dime for that, and also, the dime is smaller than the penny because of rationed supplies, and is therefore smaller, I think.  Fitting that FDR would be on it.
