Question:

Why is French fries called French fries?

I don't know why Americans call them that, but why do the British call them chips instead?(I mean the fries/chips).

  1. I was in Belgium a few years ago and they claim to have invented what we know as French fries. Since half of Belgium was once part of France, then I think that is where the name came from.

    Chips are totally different. Fries then to be long and thin, whereas chips are much thicker. Fries tend to be crispy whereas chips tend to be softer.

    Its hard to describe the differences here, but if you had a plate of fries and a plate of chips then you could tell the difference straight away.

  3. It has to do with the type of cut used. It's called a french cut. French fries is short for "French cut fries." Of course the word "frire" means to deep fry in French.

  9. Well one story is that a french king scolded his chef for cooking potatos in large chunks, and complained that they were too thick. So to spite his King, the chef cut the potatos as small and thin as possible, and fried them. The King LOVED it and so this delicious snack started.
