Real Madrid’s 23-year-old Argentinean has not enjoyed the best of times at the club since joining from Boca Juniors in 2007, and was expected to move during the transfer window to put himself in contention for a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

However, a proposed loan move to Manchester City has collapsed after Real failed to find suitable cover for the out-of-favour defensive midfielder.
