Why is Garry Ablett the bookies favourite, at the moment, to win the Brownlow Medal?

Are we going to go through the hype we had last year surrounding this over-rated player?

Just because he bears the name of Ablett many people rate him far higher than his ability warrants. He was hot favourite last year & didn't look like winning it. I predict the same this year.

i think its far to early to start picking a favourite for the brownlow anything can happen.

he does some great things on the field, so what if he is favourite, who should be, i can only come up with one or two others,

Gary Ablett isn't overrated

Its too early to be making judgments, so early in the season.

But its always fun to have a punt!!

do you really think hes overrated? he had an excellent year last year. no, he didnt win the brownlow but he did come second and there were a few matches late in the season where him and bartel were the top two players on the ground and bartel got the nod.

he was closer than you put across.

as for the brownlow this year, it is far too early to tell. the reason that he is no1 with the bookies relates to geelong's predicted success as well as his near-miss last year.

in conclusion, i think gary ablett jr's favoritism is well founded because he is a fantastic player

I don't know why he is favourite - someone has to be at that position I suppose.

Mark has made some valid points but personally I do think Ablett is somewhat over-rated. I felt he polled votes during last season where other team-mates were more deserving.

It is always the flashy midfielders (well, nearly always) who play in top sides who reap the majority of the votes from umpires, inexperienced in playing the game themselves, tend to overlook hard working backmen & ruckmen in favour of these type of playes.

Probably the second or third best player on the best team seen for a bloody long time.  So I guess if that makes him over-rated ... then yeah, OK

But this year he has muscled up a fair bit and he's started well.  

I still wouldn't have him as favourite.

I don't think he's over rated at all, he won the MVP (Leigh Matthews Medal or something) voted by his peers, which in my opinion is a much bigger achievement than something voted by the umpires and the Geelong Best and Fairest.

Ablett is bookie's favourite because of several factors;

the Ablett name; he is playing for last year's premiers; Victorians want another Vic to win it this year; they want him to win it even if he isn't the best footballer........

I agree Ablett is over-rated. Sam mitchell should be faviourite, he is already leading the brownlow on a maxium 6 votes, with many more to come
