Question:

Why is Georgia so possessive of South Ossetia?

It seems as the story unfolds that Georgia's just as power hungry as Russia is. I wonder if the position of South Ossetia's its main marker (as a trade route). If Georgia's so enthusiastic about meeting the requirements of NATO for membership, why are they so possessive of the northern provinces in dispute?

  1. South Ossetian rebels attacked Georgia proper just prior to the whole Russian invasion.  Georgia retaliated against the rebels, and then the power hungry Russians invaded.

Georgia was just defending itself from both South Ossetia and Russia.

  2. CNN isn't going to tell you this, but the whole thing is about oil. It is about control of the Caspian Sea, the region in which the third largest oil reserves can be found.
