Question:

Why is HMS Ocean's superstructure offset?

Aircraft carriers have the superstructure set off to the starboard side to make space for a runway on the flight deck, but this causes significant problems with balance of the ship as the whole superstructure is pretty heavy. Obviously on the carriers, this is unavoidable as jets need a long runway but why does Ocean, designated Landing Platform Helicopter, need the superstructure where it is. I would have thought it more sensible to put it up forward like the Bay Class. Was Ocean built to take jets?

I would be grateful for any ideas or, better still, hard facts.

  1. The superstructure  is offset to reduce the wind turbulence that they cause.  This allows safer aircraft operations.
