Why is Huntington Beach ,CA water Red/Brownish sometimes?

  1. Red tide, aka plankton.


  2. Actually, it's because of the growth of algae, sometimes know as an "algal bloom", when the growth of microscopic plants near the surface of the water occurs in dense, visible patches.  Not good for your respiratory system - stay out of the water when this occurs.

    I grew up in Huntington Beach - it doesn't happen too often, and doesn't last too long.  Sometimes they get a big influx of jellyfish, too, when the water is very warm for a few days.  Just natural phenomena - nothing to worry about, just avoid it and wait a couple of days for it to go away.
