Question:

Why is Ice Hockey only played during the winter?

It's played indoors so the weather can't affect it.

Is it just tradition now? I wouldn't have any problems with watching it during the winter.

  1. It is played all summer. There are several pro leagues in Europe. Likewise, there are a lot of hockey camps at indoor rinks in the summer, especially in Canada.

Once the season is over for the NHL, AHL, and other minors  the arenas melt the ice so they don't have to spend the $$$ on AC, but a lot of private rinks are open all year.

As for why the pro and college seasons are in the winter...well, thats just tradition. I ask the same thing about why Basketball is a winter sport for the NBA and NCAA but it is a summer sport in the Olympics.

  2. Probably one of those stupid - thats the way its always been done - things.  The same as football being played August - May - its not as if our summers are too hot is it.

  3. It's just the way it's always been. I would prefer if the main senior leagues were played in the summer too, but that's just the way it's always been.

  4. It's played from the late fall to spring.  The season developed from traditionally having to play when it's cold outside (winter time).

BUT...with the popularity of hockey, it is played in some rather warm areas.  I live in Las Vegas and we have a local team (GO WRANGLERS!) and it's odd to go into a playoff game (Kelly Cup!) when it almost 100 F outside.
