Why is India a LEDC country???

Question

Please specify within it about trade, adult literacy rate, GNP, school enrolment, death rate and birth rate etc etc.

I asked my Geograpy teacher about this question and she said that, yes, India is an LEDC.  Over on Yahoo answers one person said that it was due to population overload but I don't know wether that is correct or not.
