Why is India so poor?

I have heard and seen on TV that there is poverty EVERWHERE in India...apparently it is the second fastest growing economy..Is there even any education system there like schools and universities??If there is how can people afford it? When I see images of India i see poor people on the streets, camels, desert, slums, crowded under-developed roads...Is this what most of India is like? Do people over there speak English or only Indian? What do people do besides dance around and meditate? What is the most popular means of travel? Rikshaws, cars or animals (elephant.camel)? Just curious because India seems to be really poor, yet this one kid told me it's the second fastest growing economy....Why is India so poor?

FYI, believe it or not, there are people who are poor, but somehow they eat in expensive 5 star hotels n live there. I dont know much about that, but I think u need to go to India and see it for self. Its not all poor and whatever you think it is there. There are people around the world who are suffering from food, shelter, etc.....  India is growing in its technology and doing its best to move higher. And of course there is education, and i think they are affording education over there by working like how it is everywhere. You know India is not all about taking and taking, its about giving. You should try going there and and try see it for yourself, ill bet ull find rich and every kind of middle class people there. Its not that bad, how u think it is.

Hey, you should not have asked such a question here.  You can get to know India without coming here, even through Internet (through Wikipedia or similar sites).  But I insist you to come here and to get a feel of the place.  

I only have to just add something more to the previous answers.  Yes, if you don't know, India is the second most populous country and the largest democratic.  More than anything, India is developing in her science and technology, space technology, and even nuclear power.  India's is the third largest military power.

Or else, we Indians won't be sitting here and answering you.  Hindi is our national language though we do have a number of other regional languages.  We speak English because we are taught it as a second language from kindergarten itself.

yup, there is an education system of course

not everyone there is poor. people there have jobs

im sorry, but there is no language called 'indian' people there speak hindi (there national language) and are taught english in schools

u have nt seen real india.....India is not at all a poor nation......and what ever u have written in ur question is all c**p.......the education system is the best in our country.....what u have seen in TV is what they wanted to potray about India.....when we see TV we also see poor people on streets in other counteris.....every body cant be rich in one nation...poverty exists but not as u have mentioned it......you cnt even imagine the number of languages that we indian speak.....Your awareness about ur surrounding is bad......companies around the world are coming to india to invest......and about mode of tranport......there are more cars in a city compared to the people staying there.....so please increase your general knowledge.....

India is poor because of it's history of curupt governments. In the end, the rich get richer..and the poor get poorer.

Most good schools are private...as such, only the elite can enrol their children.

Places like Bombay and Delhi are quite modern. People travel by cars and rickshaws.

Hindi is the national language, although most schools teach English.

Contrary to what bollywood makes you beleive, India is not all about running around trees, and praying to various Gods. People work, go to school, go out...etc.

I think u have only seen the poorer part of India.....India is a developing country.....what do u mean by speaking only english language....India has it's own language...so naturally people will speak that only.....why do u all every time think that India is underdeveloped....U r right....it is the second fastest growing economy...don't listen to that stupid kid.....apply ur brain u should be sensible... don't be so stupid!.....India is so colourful....

We have so many universities,schools and other educational intitutions.....now each house has a car n people drive cars only......it is getting modern....

India is a secular country.....it is one of the biggest Democratics in the world.....who says India is poor??? other than u....there is no language like Indian....

India is not really poor .its progressing .60% of the people have a good lifestyle to live.Its economy is good.Many cities have big buildings like new delhi,mumbai,etc.Only 1 problem makes you feel poor is over population.there is Of course an education system.Over a million schools and 20000 universities have been set up.90% get education. Those who do not have much money for study the government gives them education free of cost.They shall be old photos .if you dont believe me you can come India and find 50% wrong.People speak english,hindi and traditional languages.Cars, Buses,Scooter,motorbike and Autos.There are rickshaws too.Who says its very poor .People are rich and you will be surprised to know that 4 out of 10 richest people in world are Indian which have spots of 4,5,6 and 8  and it has 53 billionaires and more than 20 million millionaires .Some villages are really poor. This all happened as the british empire took all the money,,jewels and many valueable things from india.when it got independent it was really poor and bad . See all the countries like USA.France ,Australia they have huge buildings .they all are 100 or more years independent.India is 60 years independent. As you think its not that poor.Only 1 thing we are afraid of is over population.That makes city not too good as it is.

1. Don't believe what you see on TV or what one kid tells you

3. There is no such a language as "Indian" it is a country of 1 billion people and over 100 languages, however the three most widely spoken are Hindi, Tamil and English (in no particular order)

4. India is poor yes, however not everywhere. They have a 100% tariff on the import of cars, however they are the largest (if not second largest) buyers of Rolls Royce vehicles.

5. It is impossible to generalise on the most popular means of transport however, few ride elephants and cammels. Cars are a popular means, as a trains, and aeroplanes (yes they have aeroplanes!)

6. India is well known for outsourcing of call centres. India also has a very large technology based companies, such as Infosys and microsoft. Steel is a big industry there, as is the manufacture of cars and motorbikes. They do a lot more than meditate

You seem to know nothing about India, why are you asking such a question? May I suggest you find out a little more about such areas of interest before you ask potentially insulting questions
