Why is Infanticide and Euthanasia in the giver?

  1. Probably because the book is meant to be controversial and contain subject matter that is difficult to approach and discuss in today's society.

    Also, I tend to think it is a picture of what may happen to society in the future. Maybe not exactly like the book, but close. I mean, the ideas that are presented are really scary if you think about living in a society like that, knowing how we live... The characters in the story don't kno any differently, but if we, with our knowledge, were to be thrust in that society, wouldn't you be freaked out? I think The Giver contains some truths about our own society and culture.

    Another book about a futuristic/fantasical society that does contain truths about the way we live, and puts things into a scary perspective of the way our world could be moving is "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. It's a very good book, but again, it's a little freaky if you think about the underlying issues and see them present in today's world.
