  1. Because he's running for office, and it's in his best interest to acquire as many votes as possible. An election is after a competition and the ultimate goal in any competition is to win.

Perhaps if you ever followed politics other than election years you would know that McCain has a strong record of courting independent voters.  He is more willing to work with politicians from either party than anyone else.  Throughout the presidential campaign he has been forced to adopt a more conservative approach to win over the party base and get nominated.  Now that he is nominated and has a VP that can appease the far right he can go back to being himself.  Almost anything stated during campaigns is a lie.  People like yourself need to stop being so lazy and actually go back and look at voting records.  If you don't know that any politician will say things they don't mean to get elected then you have no knowledge of politics.  The only proof is in the voting records.  Actions speak much louder than words.
