  1. I found this on wikipedia:

Francis I is considered to be France's first Renaissance monarch. His reign saw France make immense cultural advances. He was a contemporary of King Henry VIII of England and of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, his great rivals.

So I assume that he is a well remembered king since he helped shape the enviroment in France that encouraged the renaissance, which is one of frances most important era's.  Only the very "modern" monarch did not resist the renaissance.

  2. Well, he was the Renaissance monarch par excellence so far as France is concerned.

He built or rearranged most of our Loire castles

he protected Artists and savants, and it's thanks to him the Leonardo came to finish his life in France and left us a lot of his papers and the Mona Lisa.

He was the first famous Frenchman to come down with the pox.
