Why is Lebanon seen as a peaceful, progressive country?

Fifteen-year long civil war between Christians and Muslims..

occupied three times by Israel in the name of their self-defense...

houses militants in Hezbollah...

contains Palestinian militants...

Christian phalangists killed close to 3,000 P.L.O. supporters and refugees in camps at Sabra and Shatila

Lebanese civilian forces have kicked Palestinian refugees from their camps

They refuse to give citizenship and working rights to Palestinians

The recent leader of the government insisted that he would 'respect the freedom-fighting cause of the patriotic movement of Hezbollah'

He also said that (after being asked to peace talks with the Israeli government) 'Lebanon would be the last Arab country to sign a peace deal with Israel'.

Syria and Iran fund militancy in Lebanon.

They practiced religious discrimination and apartheid through confessionalism.

How does any of this make a case for a 'peaceful' country?

Seems to me Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Mali or some other country is better

  1. Yeah, Lebanon is not a peaceful country, Israel is right? LOL

are you bitter because the Lebanese, with the help of Iran and Syria, were able to expel the Israeli dog that was squatting on their land?

  2. because they like the US and the US likes them

see if the states likes you, no matter what you do, your a good country!

  3. yes , very peaceful ! maybe they are waiting for the liberation of America .

  4. There is a lot of tension there. Lebanon was originially created by the French for the Christians of the Region (The Levant) because they faced constant persecution from the Ottoman Muslims (The killed over 1 million Maronite Christians).

There were some Muslims in this country they created (Lebanon), perhaps 15-20% of the population. Persecution was still happening and many Christians left for South and Central America.

The tension exists because Muslims resent the fact that Christians controlled the country, they were richer, anti-Arab (the Christians wanted Lebanon to be a European country, not an Arab Country) and so forth.

While Christians were resentful towards Muslims because they felt Lebanon was theirs, plus they were still bitter over all the persecution.

Ultimately now there is still tension. It really is very difficult for people to live in a country where there is a lot of Muslims, as they don't co-habilitate with other cultures. They have a very dominant culture, which doesn't accomodate well for others.

In reality, Muslims could have gone to other nations.

Moreover, Lebanon is not a wealthy country, it is not their responsibility either to take on the Lebanese.

Furthermore, Lebanon was going to sign a peace treaty with Israel, but the president-elect Gemayel was assasinated before this could occur.

And also, Hezbollah needs to disarm, all they do is cause social problems and spur on war (yes, they are a terrorist group funded by Iran).

  5. Actually I think the western media present Lebanon as a non peaceful, non progressive country. & I believe they're wrong. I met many Lebanese people in & out of Lebanon. They are so amazing.

BTW, I'm not Lebanese, but I'm honored to have the Lebanese friends I do have.
