  1. Shows Luke hs potential for darkness and also hints at his heritage.

  2. Luke has to face his greatest fear.  At first glance, he sees Vader as his greatest fear, but then he sees that he, too, has the potential to be just as evil as Darth Vader, the most feared and hated thing in the galaxy's quadrant!

  3. Yoda told him that when he would enter that cave like place, he would face only his greatest fears. He went in and saw Darth Vader. Until then the whole Darth Vader thing was his fear, but after seeing himself in the helmet, there would be a new fear: What if this man or robot(He didn't knew it well then) has something to do with me? Are there any connections?

And since Yoda and Obi-Wan assure him that the force is strong with his family, he can feel that there is something going on with Darth Vader and himself, but because he is not sure what it is, he sees his own face in the helmet and that shows that there is something of Luke in Vader.

    Hope This Helps.

  4. I always thought it was kind of a clue that Vader is his father, also for him to beware the powers of the Dark Side or he will turn out like Vader...
