Why is Michael Phelps invited to the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards?

Yes, he won 8 Gold Medals in the Olympics, has appeared in many tv commercials. He has nothing to do with music. He doesn't sing, act, come out in movies yet, or comes out in music videos. He will be handing out 1 or 2 Moonman's.

He's a big celebrity now and it's been a while since MTV really stuck to it's root as "Music Television", it's always whatever is popular at the moment that comes out on there anyway.

i think its awesome. he's the greatest olympian ever. he is a celebrity, and why wouldn't he be there? he's everywhere these days. i dont understand why its such a big deal to you.
