Why is Michael Phelps soooo adored?

My friend from my swim team met him once, and said he was a HUGE jerk, anyone else met him?

i dont adore him!!! like i respect him and his accomplishments and all, but  other than the fact that ive always rooted for the Aussies, i just am sick and tired of hearing about him and that has turned me off!!!!

I've heard that he's a jerk in person as well. But no one can really say anything until they've met him you know? But the reason he's so nice and humble on tv is because people have to be you know? Like no one is going to be interested in someone whos a jerk. IDK, maybe he tries to be nice on tv for his celeb rep or something. But I think its nice that he takes pics with fans as well as autographs. He also co-founded Swim with the Stars.

OMG you're breaking my heart! He can't be a jerk! One of the reasons I love him so much is because he seems so nice and humble and I think it's great how he credits others for his success. Can anyone elaborate on their encounters with him? Maybe he was just having a bad day? Aghhh, I'm going to go cry in my pillow now lmao!

I think the reason that he is so adored is A) he is an amazing athelete.. B) He has been in the medias spotlight for a little while, making the general public widely aware of who he is... C) he is a decent looking guy who works out - younger women flock to that.

Yea, biggest jerk ive ever met. MP maintains a great public image which keeps him racking in the $, except for the DUI incident.  I live and swim in Ann Arbor, and used to see him all the time.  Sorry to break your perfect dreams of how humble and nice you think he is, hes a jerk, sorry, just is.  People only see what is right in front of them ie michael on tv at the olympic games. He is a jerk a) because he can be b) because nobody can stop him, not even his coach.  He says whatever the ***** he wants to whoever the ***** he wants when gets pissed, which is often.  Honestly I feel bad for him.  The only father figure that he has had since he was like 6 was his coach.  The guy didnt even graduate from Michigan.  Hes not a very happy person and winning gold medals is the only thing that makes him happy (besides getting s&it faced).

Because he is the best swimmer in the world. I think he's great. I haven't met him yet!
