    Back for thirds

Arguably the finest woman to play beach volleyball, Misty May-Treanor will make her third Olympic appearance in Beijing. At the 2000 Games, she and her former partner, Holly McPeak, finished fifth after losing in the quarterfinals to eventual bronze-medalists Adriana Samuel and Sandra Pires of Brazil. In Athens, May-Treanor and current partner Kerri Walsh dominated a different Brazilian pair, Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede, to win gold, the first by an American female tandem. May-Treanor and Walsh didn't lose a single game in seven matches. In Beijing, they could become the first beach volleyball team to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals (2004 men's winners Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil could do the same). The Americans earned the most Olympic qualifying points in the world, but will be the No. 2 seed in Beijing because of an FIVB rule that allows the top seed to go to a team from the host nation if it finishes the qualfying period ranked in the top six. China's Tian Jia and Wang Jie were ranked second.

At the AVP Chicaco Open in July 2008, May-Treanor became the fastest player ever to 100 career titles, making it in just her 153rd event. She's the first woman in history to reach the century mark, and just the fifth player overall. Entering Beijing, her total is at 102. As a team, May-Treanor and Walsh bring a 101-match winning streak to the Olympics, and they have won 18 consecutive tournaments (domestic and international), both all-time bests. Included are the three international tournaments they played this season, which increased their FIVB Tour title tally to 34, also an all-time best. Playing internationally this season, the duo went 21-0, winning 42 of 45 sets. Their winning streak on the FIVB Tour is at 62 and May-Treanor and Walsh have won 75 of 76 FIVB matches since the end of the 2006 season. May-Treanor was named the FIVB Tour's best offensive and defensive player in 2007, as well as the Sportsperson of the Year. She was the AVP Most Valuable Player from 2005-07.

    World wins

As it was prior to Athens, May-Treanor and Walsh enter the 2008 Olympics as the women's favorite and reigning world champion. In 2007, the pair became the first team -- men's or women's -- to win three consecutive world titles ('03, '05, '07) since the FIVB began hosting world championships in 1997. Their 2007 title came after defeating China's top two teams: Xue Chen/Zhang Xi in the semifinals and Tian Jia/Wang Jie in the final. The FIVB Tour season champion in 2002, May-Treanor and Walsh were named the AVP's Team of the Year from 2003-07. "It's very tough to maintain the high level that Kerri and I have been at for the past seven years," May-Treanor says. "We have targets on our backs and they grow yearly. I mean they're getting bigger and bigger. But it's our drive and our passion and we know that we're not getting any younger."

    Winning with Walsh

May-Treanor teamed with Walsh in 2001, and it took a year for the partnership to take off. The duo finished fifth in the world rankings in 2001, but battled to the top of the standings the following year. In 2003, they dominated the AVP Tour, winning all eight events they entered, and set off on a 90-match winning streak, which was a record until they topped it in 2008. May-Treanor and Walsh went almost a year without losing, and the streak included 49 domestic wins, 40 consecutive international victories and one exhibition triumph. Their current 101-match streak began on Aug. 24, 2007, after an Aug. 19 loss to fellow 2008 Olympians Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs in the final of the AVP Boston Open.

    Athletic roots

May-Treanor's athletic success fits with her family's background. She learned how to play volleyball from her father, Robert "Butch" May, who was on the 1968 U.S. volleyball team that placed seventh at the Mexico City Games. May-Treanor's late mother, Barbara, played tennis at UCLA, and her cousin, Taylor Dent, was a member of the U.S. Olympic tennis team in Athens. Her athletic background was even aided by her babysitter, thr
