  1. Would you like to work in, for example,  a lumber yard with someone who does not understand directions in the working language?

The official languages in Canada are French and English and there is a language test to immigrate.

Would you be surprised if you moved to Germany, for example and they expected you to speak German to work?

  2. the language of Quebec is french what do you  expect ? learn to speak it like I did and you wont have a problem.

  3. Okay, this is not racism, it is the way of that province.  It is common knowledge that to get a job in Quebec, you need to have your French fleuncy, because that is the main language of communication there.  It does not matter if you speak 10 other languages, you will not be hired easily at all, without your French.  You could speak no Enlgish and still get a job, as long as you spoke French, and this is even moreso, in the surrounding areas in Quebec.  Montreal is more english-speaking, yet there are so many people trying to get those jobs, that there is increased competition.  And recall, that even the low-level jobs, like McDonald's etc, will require you speak French.

So you have a few options:

1 - Take courses and seriously learn French

2 - Move out of the province

    Good luck!

  4. because of the turists.I like Montreal.you should go to Quebec city and see the arrogance up there. Geez, never going back. I speak 4 languages fluently and they treated me like an idiot because none of them is French, even if i spoke French they wouldn't understand me because God knows what language they speak, real French make fun of them.

  5. What does knowing how to speak French and English have to do with racism? Canada's two official languages are French and English, and they are both used in Montreal. Obviously, if you're going to work there, you're going to need to communicate with people. If you can't deal with that, move someplace else.

  6. In Canada, the official languages are English and French, which means all other languages are obsolete. It doesn't mean they're racist or discriminatory, it's just that the government only delcared those two languages official and none others official. This means all documents, government buisness and affairs are officially conducted in either English or French.

In the United States, however, no such technicality exists, which allows many states (but not all) to practice publishing vital documents and information in virtually any language, although English is considered the de facto language. Spanish is widely spoken in the U.S., though, and this is largely accomodated for in most of the country.

  7. usually it depends on the company. If u are in the downtown area you can get served in english in a starbucks for example. there was a news article in the journal de montreal talkin about how it is hard to be served in french. i disagree with this. I cannot get served in english in my area which is more english then it is french. they always tell me ... can u speak french they do not even try.  But chances are they will higher a person that only speaks french instead of someone that only speaks english.

This is because... the language in quebec is french. Store signs for example have to be written in french and they do not want the stop signs to say STOP. It has to say it in french... and the french "Arrete" has to be 3 times bigger then the english STOP.  THis is because they want to encourage french. they want to keep their french heritage which is starting to decrease a little. and besides the french dont like the english because the english came to take over their land.
