Why is the figure skater Evgeny or Evgeni Plushenko nicknamed "Zhenya"? Does "Zhenya" translate into anything?

The name Zhenya is the short form of Evgeni in Russian. Just like Bill is short for William in the US. It doesn't seem shorter mostly because they use the Cyrilic alphabet which follows a whole different set of spelling and rules.
