  1. Prince Harry's full given name is Henry Charles Albert David, but when he was born, his parents (Prince Charles and Princess Diana) said that although he would be christened as Henry, they actually planned to call him Harry. It is just the nickname they preferred.  (Harry is a fairly common nickname for the name Henry.)

For E.L. (poster below me) - his current title is "His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales" - but Prince Henry of Wales is an acceptable way to shorten it.  He isn't "THE" Prince of Wales, but he is still "A" Prince of Wales.  Hope that helps.  =)

  2. Prince Harry isn't the Prince of Wales yet. He will be when Prince Charles dies.

Anyway, it's a stupid royal tradition that sons called Henry get called Harry. Nothing more than the royals being scared of change and obsessive with daft traditions.

  3. Eh? Prince Harry is Prince Harry not Prince Henry, is he not??

  4. He was christened Henry but is known as Harry ... because Princess Diana preferred Harry ...If he becomes King he will be known as King Henry IX   ....

  5. Although Prince Harry has taken the surname Wales, he is H.R.H. Lt. Prince Harry Wales, not Prince Harry of Wales. In time, he will almost certainly become a Royal Duke, like his uncles, H.R.H. Prince Edward, Duke of Wessex, and H.R.H. Prince Andrew, Duke of York.

H.R.H. Prince William has also taken the surname Wales.

When H.M. Queen Elizabeth R. II, Duke of Lancaster (even when she's a Queen, the Monarch is "Duke of Lancaster") is succeeded by H.R.H. Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, he will become H.M. King (probably) Charles R V, Duke of Lancaster.

The Duchy of Cornwall will become vacant.

H.R.H. Prince William will have to learn Welsh, and will go from being H.R.H. Prince William Wales to H.R.H. William, Prince of Wales, (the title bourne by the Heir to the Throne). At some point, he too will almost certainly be created a Royal Duke.

Calling "Prince Henry" "Prince Harry" is analogous to calling someone named "Albert" "Burt", i.e. a familiar/contracted version.

  6. choice of his parents

just as william is known as wills

    not will    bill    liam

  7. It's just a nickname for his friends and family members, but the whole world uses it, too.

  8. His parents,Diana and Charles, liked the nickname "Harry," which is interchangeable with "Henry." There is a historical connection-Henry VIII was also known as "Harry."

And to correct an answer: Harry will never be Prince of Wales. He is not next in line, his brother,William is!

  9. the name comes from the French Henri. If you pronounce that the way the mediaeval English did, you get a nasal "Harry".

The present Queen's uncle of Gloucester was Henry, pronounced Harry, and a number of noble families follow the same tradition. King Henry VIII was always "Harry" to his intimates and the peasant population - or Good King Hal, which is another nickname.

Harry seems to be a no-nonsense fella who prefers to be called by his baptismal name rather than title. Good for him!

  10. I call him something else entirely.

  11. More trendy!

  12. He isn't prince of Wales, only William is, and because Harry is an appropriate nickname (chosen by his parents) for Henry.

Wills is a diminutive of William,

Harry is a diminutive of Henry...see how that works?
