Prince Philip, Duke of Edinbrough, is currently married to Queen Elizabeth of England - why is he not, through marriage, legally the king of England and all the titles that go with that?

  1. the main reason is at the time of their marriage England was a country devastated by to world wars and was only on its way to recovery Queen Elizabeth lead her country though the war becoming a great love to every family, but because Prince Philip was Greek prince raised in England, they believed it was easier for the Queen to hold her title and the prince with his!! to hold the hearts of Britain!! But prince Philip has give his all for Britain..an has served his country and his family!!!

  2. because he married elizabeth, who was born to be queen. she outranks him, because she is royal by birth. if phillip had the title of king, he would outrank elizabeth, as king is higher than queen.

therefore he has the title of prince.

  3. The reason Prince Philip is not titled a "King" is because only the sitting Sovereign can hold the title of King. Prince Philip can never be in the line of succession, therefore he can never hold the title of King since he can never sit on the throne.

In the British Monarchy, the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges and all of his titles (Duke Edinburgh, Earl of Merione, Baron Greenwich and Prince of the United Kingdom ) are gifts from the Queen.

However, the wife of male monarch takes on her husband's rank and style upon marrying, becoming a Queen.

Why difference? As "emily.ellwood" pointed out, Kings almost always out-rank the Queen in most royal traditions and as such, Kings usually are the head of a Monarchy.

This policy avoids any confusion on the matter by making sure that only the soveriegn can hold the title of King.
