  1. This is a good point.  Republicans are becoming more like European Christian Democrats in that they support big government programs that promote the family as opposed to old Republicans who supported small government.

I don't like either party's big government but the Republican form has less of an impact in my life.

  2. Today's Republicans want to control behavior and the problem with this is that they will use any means, however wrong or corrupt, to attain their goals.  Social issues, such as abortion or g*y marriage, mean more to them than other issues, such as poverty or health care.

When you combine this social obsession with so-called conservative values, you get a small government when it comes to programs to help the poor or the elderly, and a huge government when it comes to religious wars, surveillance and   the destruction of personal freedom.

Freedom is not a word that occupies the minds of today's Republicans, for they operate in a rigid sphere that is governed by their own interpretation of the Good Book, and somehow want to legislate religious faith, which is an impossible goal.

  3. It isn't per se, but nor is it better. To be honest, though, my current perception is that the socialist tenancies of modern republicans are still *slightly* less intrusive than their democratic counterparts. That doesn't make me like republicanism, though. Pax!
