Where did the term Rotovegas come from?

Rotovegas suggests bright lights, loud music, everything Rotorua is not. So how did it get it's nickname?

  1. The obvious answer is ;   Why Not?

It suggests bright lights, night life and everything that a careless tourist with a pocket full of dollars could be interested in--even if it's not quite right.

It's an advertising person's 'come on, spend here'.

There is also the ironic touch that the towns that add Vegas to their name could never ever be compared with Las-.

Towns like Inglevegas (Inglewood) and Invervegas for Invercargill.  (Yes, they do it too)

  2. it is just a nickname there is also Ashvegas (Ashburton) and Greyvegas (Greymouth)

  3. Dont know why Rotovegas is called that - ,might have sumthin to do with their main road - looks somethin like Vegas Strip (yes Ive been to Nevada) but lacks the Neon and hookers (Doris was told she had to retire - Saggy used up old hooker made the place look ugly - not to worry in her place they erected a duck crossing)..
