Why is Russell Crowe not in the movie AUSTRALIA?

He was at one time to star in the movie. What happened?

I think he had scheduling conflicts or something.  But, while I do like Crowe as an actor, I have to say that I like Hugh Jackman a lot better and I LOVE that he is in this.
