Why is Russia at war with Georgia?

I'm a little confused as to why Russia is at war with Georgia. From what I understood it seemed like georgia was trying to take over moscow or something. Can any one explain what's going on?

No - far from it .Osetia is a small part of Georgia but most citizins in there consider themself Russian. Georgia however thinks the province of Osetia belongs to them. osetia some time ago declared itself independent from Georgia.now georgia send in tanks and soldiers to reinforce their authority. the russians however came to the aid of their nationals in Osetia.So we have a war now between Russia and georgia. --- nothing to do with Georgiaaaah USA

There is an area of land ( South Ossetia ) not Moscow that both Georgia and Russia claim to own. Georgia sent in troops to attempt to take that land. Now that Russia is fighting back ( Who knew ) Georgia is calling Russia the aggressor.

The whole conflict is about Southern Ossetia.

There are long-lasting conflict there. Now Ossetia is officially a part of Georgia, but they don't want to be so. The want to be either independent, either a part of Russia (as North Ossetia is now). And when it possible the local population gained the Russian citizenship (90 % now are both citizens of Russia and Georgia/Ossetia). After the conflist 1992-94 SO is de-facto independent state.

That area isn't controlled by Georgia, it is controlled by locals + Russian peacekeepers.

The previous night Georgia attacked Ossetia, they took its capital Tshinvali and killed about 1400 (+ 600 after) of its people +10 Russian peacekeepers. Russia suggested Georgia to end the fire, the refused. Ater that Ossetia asked Russia for help. Couse the UN"s did nothing to make Georgia stop the fire, Russia moved their troops there. Russia as a peacekeeper has to support the side that was attacked.

Th most "fuuny" thing is a fact that the Western Media said nothing when Georgia was shelling for 15 hours and started reports only when Russians came.

it really is almost childish on both parts.  georgia used to be part of russia.  when the wall fell.  they developed democracy.  well their is this one province that is ethnically different from georgia, and sticks to theirself.  even though they are a part of georgia, so georgia doesn't supply them with basic goverment services(water, trash pickup, etc.)  heres the skinny.  the georgian president wants to take them in the fold, but most of them want to deffect to russia.  the russians want to make the georgian president look bad.  so, they kill the civilians for political gain.  no side is in the right.  both need a poke in the eye, and kick in the ***.

Georgia violated a cease fire and attacked South Ossetia. south ossetia then request russian help and in rolled the tanks. Ossetia has been wanting full independence for some time. The American media seems to be 'lying' to the public or at least not reporting the whole story. Russia is being unjustly demonized however both sides are in the wrong to a certain point, most blame should be placed on Georgia.
