  1. For one, Russia misses being an Empire and having the admiration of all of its neighbors.  They hate the fact that the people they used to rule would rather pattern their governments after the US.  Russia has been not much more than a third world country for years and just recently have come into a lot of money with their oil and now they want to be the big dog on the block again.  We better get used to russia intimidating their neighbors, or get with our allies as flex our collective muscles like with did with Ronald Reagan.  Dang, thats one man we need right now!  Reagan was the type of president that would bomb the c**p out of a country and tell us about it afterwords.  The world was afraid of Reagan, but loved him at the same time.

  2. Long story.  Georgia is a former Soviet Republic, and hence, has many Russians living within its borders, most notable, South Ossetia.  The Russians in Georgia wanted to be independent, so they start some rioting and other activity.  Georgia sends in its tanks and attacks some protesters, and starts forcing the Russians in South Ossetia to surrender (South Ossetia is a Georgian province near Russia).  Russia doesn't like this, since the protesters and people being attacked by Georgia are mostly Russian, so they send in their tanks and bomb Georgia.  Likely, because of geopolitics, Russia dislikes a strong ally of the US so close it it, so Russia kept bombing and fighting Georgia, and ordered the Georgian president to resign.  About a day or two ago, the Russians captured major parts of Georgia, like Gorbi, and were winning, but just yesterday, they signed a ceasefire agreement.  Bombing was just a small part of the Russian offensive to fight Georgia.

  3. In history. South Osetia has always been under Georgia rule. It is part of Georgia. When Genghis Khan swept past Russia in the 12th century, a large number of Russians ran over to South Osetia.

Also, during the time of the Soviet Union, a large number of Russians also went over to South Osetia to take up residence.

So, by today, South Osetia has 66% Russians compared to 33% Georgian. These Russians also wanted South Osetia to be part of Russia than Georgia.

During the time of the Soviet Union, the Georgians could not do anything but accept this situation.

However, now that the Soviet Union is gone, Georgia hopes to regain what they feel as been theirs all these centuries. But the Russians in South Osetia refused.

So, they declared an independent South Osetia instead.

I think Georgia then sent troops into the troubled region and a lot of trouble was created. War.

In order to become more capable militarily, Georgia also courted the USA and joined NATO. This makes Russia uneasy due to the eastwards expansion of NATO.

    So Russia bombed Georgia.

I cannot say who is in the right or wrong. But it is a very sad situation.

  4. It is always very funny to read people who don't know anything. In this case it is sad. Why you don't ask us ? People from Osetia. I ran away from Osetia after georgians killed many of us in 1992.

Specially for you, our history, shortly, after you finish reading, start to think, at least once in your life, who is the only one hope for my folk ? it is definetely not georgians, they kill us during whole our history. FYI: Stalin was also georgian. Same as top leaders of KGB. They are aggresive by their nature.

In 1920s the area of South Osetia was included in Georgian SSR.

SSR stands for Soviet Socialistic Republic as you can remember, the part of USSR.

In April of 1922 by decree of Comissar Soviet of \Georgia, in South Osetian area was founded Autonomia of South Osetia [Autonomia=independent zone]. It was only a formal decisision. Georgian leaders were making assimilational politics in South Osetia - they forced Osetians to change nationality in documents, Osetian place-names was renamed in Gruzian (Georgian).

In 1939 Osetian written language, originaly based on latin alphabet was translated [changed] to Georgian, in Osetian schools teaching was changed to Georgian. At the same time, the written language of North Osetian area was changed to cyrillic. As result - Osetian nation was artificially divided into South Osetians and North Osetians.

In the end of 1980's a national movement of liquidation of any Autonomias inside Georgian SSR was started. To protect the rights of South Osetia and to establish a constitutional guarantee of Autonomia, South Osetian delegates was made a descision to transform South Osetia Autonomia to South Osetia Republic on 10 November 1989. But georgians declined it, found it unconstitutional.

In 13 days, 23 of November 1989, members of georgian national movement leaded by Zviad Gamsakhurdia, made a campaign to South Osetian capital. Many thousands of demonstrators (from 30 to 60 thousands) came to Thskhinvali on more than 400 buses and cars from Tbilisi and other georgian regions. Officialy this act was presented as a peaceful mass-meeting, but among other men were several hundred people carying submachine guns. To protect Tskhinvali, all men in the city were standing up. Having no chance to enter the city, the demonstrators took it in the ring. The blockade of the city was last for four months, during it 400 people were injured, 6 were killed.

In 1990, Georgia officially declined its status inside of the USSR, hence declined agreements made in April of 1922 by decree of Comissar Soviet of Georgia. After this, South Osetia declared its independency, argumenting that before 1922 Osetia wasn't a part of Georgia.

The new Georgian leaders from nationalistic movements wasn't pleased with it. Georgia at that moment was leaded by Zviad Gamsakhurdia.

Situation became worse after elections to South Osetian Council of deputys, which was arranged in South Osetia - not in Georgia on 9 of December 1990. On the next day, Georgia made a response - the South Osetian Autonomia was canceled and included in Georgia as its part.

On 11 December 1990, at the one of the main streets of Tskhinvali, in collisions, three were killed and two injured. This was a cause for Georgian leaders to declare state of emergency and a curfew in the city and Djaus area.

On the night between 5 and 6 January 1991 leaders of the Georgia brought troops of militia [police] and national Guards to Tskhinvali. Disorders in the city and result is displacement of Georgian troops from the South Osetian capital.

After this moment, confrontation between Tbilisi and Tskhinvali was brought to the next level.

On 29 January 1991 the leader of South Osetian council Torez Culumbegov was invited to talks to Tbilisi. Up on his arrival, he was brought to the jail, right from the House of Republic in Tbilisi.

On 1st February 1991, the union of power engineers [electricians] had disconnected South Osetia from the energy supply.

On 23 March 1991 took place a meeting of South Osetian deputy of all levels. During the meeting they made a step back to status of South Osetian Autonomia. A comitee for stabilising of situation in South Osetia was founded.

On 4 May 1991 on another meeting South Osetian deputy made descision to cancel South Osetian Soviet Republic, previously founded after declaration of independency, and to go back to status of Autonomia.

On 26 of May on president elections in Georgia was elected president Zviad Gamsakhurdia.

Meanwhile, the confrontation was strengthening. As for 4 June of 1991, 70 South Osetian villages was destroyed. From 6 June to 1 September 1991, 209 people was killed, 460 civils was injured, 150 was disappeared without a trace. Many victims also was on Georgian side, those who lived in the Villages near the conflict - they was a victims of Osetians. Many Gruzian escaped from their homes to the territory of Georgia.

On 1 September 1991 meeting of South Osetian deputies had cancelled its own descisions from 4 of May 1991 as incompetent, also had canceled a "Council of South Osetian deputy of all levels" as unconstitutional, and restored the status of republic with a new name - Republic of South Osetia.

On 19 January 1992 on referendum for independency in South Osetia, 98%[!] of South osetians agreed to declare an independency.

On February 1992 Georgian artillery and tanks started to shell living areas of Tskhinvali intensively. Shelling was last to 13 of June 1992. Under the shelling, hundreds of civils killed.

On 8 March 1992, Eduard Shevarnadze back to Georgia as leader of Gossovet. After this shelling of South Osetia was streightened.

On 20 of May 1992, near Osetian village Zahr, Georgians shoot down a column of women, elder mans and children, who were escaping from South to North Osetia by the road Tskhinval-Dzhar. 36 civil people age from 11 to 76 were killed right on their feet.

On 29 May 1992, Top Council of Republic of South Osetia passed a declaration of independency.

On 24 of June 1992 in Sochi, was written four-sided Russian-Georgian-Osetian (South and North) agreement about stabilizing Gruzian-Osetian conflict.

On 14 of June 1992 Russian-Georgian-Osetian peacemakers was located in South Osetia, after that open confrontation was finished.

On 31 of August 1992 was completed acceptance of memorandum for the official border of Republic of South Osetia.

From 2 of November 1993 to 16 November 2006, Republic of South Osetia had accepted a constitution, an anthem, parliament, during this time three presidents changed thru elections.

and now they started war against us again, luckyly my relatives were able to hide in North Osetia, but thousands of us are dead. Thanks to such people like you, you speak about things you don't know. Georgeans started the war because main rule to join to NATO was to get back Osetia and Abhazia. Try to guess who provided to georgians such way to join NATO ?

Go to the library and check old newspapers about historical facts as I did it for you (read above)

  5. There was a region of Georgia called South Ossetia that had driven the central government out in the early '90s and was pretty much running its own affairs, even though it was officially part of Georgia (Kind of like China and Taiwan). Most of the people in the region are pro-russian; and by the terms of the UN cease fire agreement which ended the initial war, there are Russian peace-keepers in the Region. Russia started offering citizens of the area Russian citizenship and Russian passports, which most people in the area took advatage of, and this angered Georgia. Last week, as the Olympics were starting, Georgia broke the cease fire agreement and launched a suprise attack, killing some Russian soldiers and between 1500 and 2000 civilians. It is now pretty obvious that Russia was expecting Georgia to try something like that, and they counterattacked, as Bush said, "with disproportionate force," driving Georgian forces out of S Ossetia and another region trying to break away from Georgia, Abkhazia. That took them a few minutes (Imagine a steam roller running over a watermelon), and then they went beyond South Ossetia and moved into the areas from which Georgia launched the initial attack, and have pretty much been wiping out the Georgian military.

I don't think they want to take over Georgia, they want independence for S Ossetia and Abzhazia (which would clearly be under Russian influence), to punish Georgia for allying themselves so closely to the US, and possibly to arrest Georgia's leader for war crimes based on the civilian deaths in the initial Georgian attack.

Meanwhile, the arguments about Sovereignty and Territorial integrety that the West is using to justify Georgia in starting this war would also make China completely justified if it launched a military invasion of Taiwan, and don't think China hasn't realized this.

  6. Just Russia being Russia.  Democracies on their borders make them nervous.

  7. Bush and Rumsfeld were looking for more troops for the "Coalition of the Willing" back in 2002 and 2003. So they made Georgia some hints they couldn't follow up on and promises they had no intention of keeping. Georgia's President Saakashvili was a sucker and swallowed the bait, thought he had a mutual defense treaty.

Meanwhile we supported the breakaway republic of Kosovo becoming a nation, against the wishes of Russia and China. Of course we have every right to do this, but there are more and less diplomatic ways to do this, and we did it undiplomatically.

Fast forward to summer 2008 when some provinces of Georgia want to break away. Saakashvili thinks he has U.S. backing and goes in hard with tanks and artillery, and civilians die. Russian leaders Putin and Medvedev say the situation is just like Kosovo and go in with tanks and artillery to defend the breakaway provinces, and more people die.

Georgian President Saakashvili calls on Bush for help.  Bush does nothing.  What could he do with our military stretched so thin after all the bungling in Iraq?  Russia presses its advantage.

  8. Because Georgia was the one who attacked the russian part of ossetia and killed thousands of ethnic russians. russia couldn't stand it (what country would?) and ordered war. dont listen to all the newspapers who blame russia, they only blame it because they feel threatened by russia. and stupid bush is brainwashing the nation into thinking that the war is russia's fault. russia was only defending itself!
