My mom has all their albums, so i took the time to listen to all of them, and i'm not impressed. All they talked about was s*x mostly and had good beats. It was almost like the female version of 2 live crew. I think their overrated and that TLC beats them out anyday. What do you think?

  1. TLC is not a rap group.

They were out for a long time and they have seemed to out last the other female rap groups. When they came out, the rap world was still heavily dominated by males. Plus there weren't that many female rap groups anyways so there goes the competition.

  2. Because they were a legend and paved the way for many more inspiring rap female artists

  3. FIRST OF ALL:   Salt-n- Pepa was a female RAP GROUP...

TLC is NOT!!!....   only ONE member of TLC raps and she only does a few verses or hooks....  They are PRIMARILY a singing group!

Second....  2 Live Crew was FAR, FAR more explicit than ANY group male or female at that time...   so, I don't know HOW you can even TRY to compare ANYBODY to what 2 Live Crew was doing!!!!

Salt-n-Pepa was MUCH, MUCH, more than 's*x'....  And you couldn't have heard ALL their music if you honestly believe that.

Their FIRST SONG   "The Show Stopper" was HUGE.... I mean, 2 female emcees challenging the HOTTEST rappers in hip-hop  Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick????

'My Mic Sounds Nice"???    Another classic!!    (All of this is BEFORE "Push It" & the songs everybody else knows)

I believe Salt-n-Pepa are great for NOTHING else than to be able to put in YEARS and make CLASSICS in a Hip-Hop which is RIDICULOUSLY male dominant.

I mean, a female rapper cannot even get a record deal nowadays... much less have a career... and Salt-N-Pepa had a great career, complete with Grammy Awards and everything....

ALL of these female groups people are mentioning ARE NOT PURE RAP GROUPS!!!     NONE of them!!      SWV, TLC....  they're singing groups with a 'hip-hop' flavor... but they're NOT RAP GROUPS!

  4. i like TLC more too.  but if there was no SNP would there have been a TLC?

  5. Because they were one of the first few female rap artists and they sang about stuff that females didn't generally sing about like s*x...like it was unknown territory and unusual for women to sing about thus they took a risk.

  6. I think Diana Ross & The Supremes would top any list of female groups.

  7. Because they're better then TLC

  8. idk i hate them..

  9. Because they were a girl group who were in your face and flaunted their sexuality during a time when society viewed women as being more submissive.  Songs like "Push It" is a good example.

Other female musicians during this era who broke through the societal imposed barrier include Madonna and Cindy Lauper.

  10. Salt and Pepa were not the first female rappers, but they were the first to make noise, and they also kicked open  a lot of doors for many female groups including TLC.

Honestly, I think SWV was better than TLC, but I respect your opinion.

    @ Rob D. Soulkid

We clearly know that SWV and TLC are not rap groups, but Salt N Pepa kicked open doors for them (even SWV and TLC will admit it). Like you said they had hip-hop flavor...remember hip-hop is a culture, too. And besides the asker said "greatest female groups" so back down, and pay attention homie!!

  11. Whoa now!  I don't even know y I'm responding 2 this question.  Must b 4 the points & because I'm bored at work LOL, cuz there's no way in the world u can compare S&P to the 2 Live Crew.  That just goes 2 show that u may have heard the songs, but didn't actually LISTEN 2 the lyrics.  I could c if u said Lil Kim, Foxy, Trina, Khia, or Rashida & there wouldn't be any argument on my part.  In a field that was dominated by men, S&P held it down, put out bangin joints, & represented for the ladiez.  Like MJ passed the torch 2 Kobe, u could say S&P passed the torch to TLC.

  12. Salt n Pepper are from the 80s when music was forced to not suck

    TLC are that S****y mid-late 90s R&B c**p

  13. TLC doesn't really beat out S-N-P in my opinion.

When SNP came out, they did something different and new.  Looking back, you may not see them as great, but for their time, they were innovators.  They helped pave the way for groups like TLC, although contrary to popular belief, they weren't the first female hip hop group.

They were no where near being the female version of 2 live crew.  The female equivalent to that group would be Anquette and the Throw the P girls, as a matter of fact they were signed with Luke and had the raunchy bass sound back in the day.  SNP talked about s*x, but they also talked about protecting yourself, expressing yourself, and empowerment for women.

I use to like TLC when they came out, they were cool, but there were other girl groups back then that were just as popular.

  14. Salt-N-Pepa were/are considered one of the greatest female groups because:

they were (if im not mistaken) the first all female rap group and they empowered women by talking about topics in their lyrics , some of whic you mentioned, that at that point in time.. that women werent addressing as commonly as they do now...

and I think, that you should rely stop trying to compare EVERYONE to TLC.. its not necessary

  15. I don't think they were great (or even good), but you have to respect them because they paved the way for female hip hop artists.

Since we're stating which R&B artists are better than Salt-n-Pepa...Whitney Houston is way better than Salt-n-Pepa.
