i'm english and i went to scotland on holiday last week. i realised when i was there how raring scotland is to become its own independant state and people have always said the english hate the scottish and vice versa, but why? as in what are the historical reasons for it?

for example in politics you have the BNP (British National Party) and the SNP (Scottish National Party). is scotland not part of britain? i guess the SNP wants scotland to be its own free state, so does the BNP not include scotland in its views?

i know the scottish are a very proud nation but whereas if you bought a souvenir in London it would probably have the Union Jack on it (British Flag), in scotland all souvenirs contain the scottish flag and there is no sign of the Union Jack anywhere

so why is scotland so desperate to be independant? sorry if it seems a bit ignorant or whatever just im curious as to the general reasons why - i know this doesnt apply to every Scot, just it seems the majority feel this way

  2. I think mentioning the BNP & SNP in the same sentence is dangerous, or at the very least very naive.  The BNP is a party based on Fascist & Racist ideals, the SNP exist to push forward independence for Scotland.  The BNP doesn't have any seats in Scotland because people here widely reject their Fascist ideals. Scotland has a political union with England.  Unfortunately in 1707 when this was passed they weren't given a vote on that.  The only people that could vote were the noblemen who Burns famously said in A Parcel of Rogues "We were bought and sold for English gold, such a parcel of rogues in a nation".  He was talking about the nobles.

I vote SNP but don't think for one moment I hate you or any other english people.  I think we could do a lot better as equal partners.  This was what the original Acts of Union promised us, but they were quickly rewritten by the heavily English dominated Westminster Parliament.  There is also a feeling that government from London is far too remote.  London is over 400 miles away from Edinburgh for example, and futher from the Northern Isles.

The Union Jack is not the correct name for the "Rag" by the way.  That flag is flown only on ships, the correcft name is the "Union Flag".  Unfotunately it was hijacked by English football hooligans so maybe it's not so popular with people because of that, but if you bothered to look at any buildings in Edinburgh (for example) you would see it is flown from many of the public buildings.  Perhaps you should be asking why you English people are not so proud to fly the Cross of St George.  The Saltire is our National Flag, we've always had a strong cultural identity here in Scotland, even after the Union, so what's wrong in flying our flag?

Not all Scots want independence.  If that was the case we'd have had it a long time ago.

  3. Because Scottish soldiers were sent to die in American wars  by English votes.

Because we don't want the tyranny of an English right wing extremist majority in the British Isles.  You know, the dirt who voted for tuition fees, for example.  We don't want their Blatcherism.  We don't want the American Way.

Because we don't want the New Labour Tories, or the overt Tories.  Stuff your so-called United Kingdom.  It actually means English right wing tyranny over the other, smaller nations.

Devolution is not enough because it was not enough to save Scottish soldiers' lives.

    God d**n all Atlanticist collaborators!

  4. At the root of the differences between the Scottish people and the English is the issue of race.

Whereas the Scottish people are in the main of Celtic [British and Irish] origin, the English are seen as invaders mainly of the Anglo-Norman kind who have for many centuries subjugated the good folk of Scotland and denied them their liberty and inventive genious to fulfil the dream which is Scotland of and for the Celtic peoples of Breten and Ireland.

I should advise you that I am entirely biased and am Welsh and when England play Scotland or Ireland at the Rugby, I know who's side I'm on and it is not England.  Only when they play France, maybe.

My explanation above is over simplified and does not explain the reasons in total.  I hope you get some replies from Scotland.

Why should products made in Scotland bear the Union Flag or Jack?

The Union Flag is not recognised in Scotland any more than it is in Wales or any other Celtic country, Ireland etc.  For the Irish in particular it is seen as the "Butcher's Apron".
