Why is Sligo, Ireland about 10-20 years behind Dublin?

Is it because it's the country side and Dublin is THEE city? Lols, someone explain? I'd love to know more about Ireland. But isn't it in the west coast where the most beautiful sights are? 10 points for best answer! Thanks =)

sligo and the rest of connaught has generally been ignored for the most part by the government in dublin for centuries.  Instead of pushing for decentralisation and foreign investment in the west the government have instead focused their energies on making dublin the hub of this country.

factories have closed but yet no investment has taken their place, i believe it is because the west of ireland is seen by many in dublin as a bit of a "black sheep", this goes back to the days of Oliver Cromwell who gave the Irish people two choices "To h**l or to Connaught", meaning a life in connaught was a fate worse than death.  

During the famine of the 1840s most of the deaths occurred in the West and adjacent counties like donegal/Clare, hence the population was reduced dramatically.  most of the strong willed young people moved away and the area stagnated, parts of the west are slowly recovering though, places like galway city, castlebar and westport are now thriving centres in their own right though infrastruture (roads, rail etc) to and from these towns is severely hindering future progress.

Dublin has been massively invested as has the commuter belt and most of Leinster and Munster.

Connacht (The Province where Sligo is) and Ulster have been underfunded.  The Border Mildlands and Western Region underspent in the last National Development plan by €2Billion.  That is money earmarked for infrastructure development that didn't go anywhere.  And one of the main reasons companies set up and grow in areas is infrastructure.

Ireland's western coast has some of the most beautiful vistas in Europe, let alone Ireland.  And rural Ireland can be developed without it turning into mini Dublins by having the development done sustainably and not letting developers lobby councillors to over-ride planners objections.

lol cuz Dublin is  CITY and Sligo is in the back end of no where, if the whole of ireland became modernised i would move away
