  1. It's cheap and abundant. Ocean water is 3% NaCl.


  2. Many Metallic Chlorides liberate Hydrogen Chloride gas, HCl, when warmed with concentrated Sulphuric Acid, H2SO4.

    In laboratory Sodium chloride is used as it is easily available and it is cheap.
