Also, how does the federal railway company of Switzerland keep from losing tons of cash and how does it serve so many of the country's cities and towns.

  1. It is state-owned and subsidised from the public purse. In Switzerland people are happy to do this because they are willing to pay the price for an efficient rail system. In the winter it is often the only way of getting around. When roads are blocked due to heavy snowfall, the snow clearing trains keep the lines clear and everyone uses the train.

Almost all of Switzerland's rail system is electric and 70% of the power for this comes from hydro-electric sources, which are the cleanest and most energy-efficient way of generating electricity. This is made possible by the country's geography as it consists almost entirely of mountains.

  2. Because they invested money in it.  The US chose to invest in roads instead.

It probably loses cash just like any other transit system.

  3. Is it...? Or does it just have that reputation because of the fastidious nature of the Swiss?

  4. Maybe it was made by the watchmakers...

  5. Couldn't it be because of it's size and how the government runs the country?... it's also a neutral country, not part of the European Union, is one of the most richest countries in the world, and has never been in any wars since 1815 so it could focus more on it's economy

  6. A lot of it has to do with population density.

A lot of it has to do with National Pride.

I am not sure what you mean by tons of cash, public transportation is not a cash paying system in any country, to be affordable for the average person to ride it has to be subsidized.
